HE the President makes Presidential Fleet Review
The Presidential Fleet Review organized in paralleled to the 60th anniversary celebrations of the Sri Lanka Navy was held today (11th December 2010) at the Port of Colombo. His Excellency the President Mahinda Rajapaksa inspected the fleet in the presence of Commander of the Navy Vice Admiral Thisara samarasinghe.
Eight foreign Naval war ships which had arrived here and SLNS Sayura were part of this historical event.
The Presidential Fleet Review commenced with HE the President getting onboard the Presidential yacht (Fast Attack Craft P 444, P 442) and the Indian Naval Sailing ship INS Tharangini giving the first salute. She is 54m in length and the compliment of the crew is 79 both officers and sailors. Her capability of sailing with the two main propellers and sails is a significant feature. INS Tharangini is commanded by Commander Manish Sain.
With a compliment of 249 both officers and sailors on board and 163.5m in length, the Russian Naval ship “Admiral Vinogradov” is a Udaloy class Destroyer. Its Commanding officer is Captain Peter A Podkopaylo.
The Frigate class “Lanzhou” of the Chinese Navy is a 95m in length. A crew of 144 is on board under the command of Captain Wang Xiaoyong.
PNS Zulfiqar, a frigate class war ship of Pakistan Navy is 123m length. She is commanded by Captain Foad Amin Baig and has a crew of 265. “BNS Umar Farooq” is the Bangladesh Naval ship, commanded by her Commanding Officer, Commander Mahmud Hossain.
The Iranian Naval ship IRIS Alvand is 95m in length and has a crew of 144. It is commanded by Commander M H Hojjantinina.HMTS “ Chonburi” of Royal Thai Navy is a Corvette class ship, 64.4m in length and with a 48 crew on board and is commanded by Lieutenant Commander Chaidej Bunnag.
Indian Naval ship INS Mysore with a crew of 79 is commanded by Captain AK Jain. It is 163m length.
The finale of the Presidential Fleet Review and the International Sail Past was marked with the salute of the Sri Lanka Naval ship Sayura.
