Three Naval Commands receive Presidential Colour
The Presidential Colour awarding ceremony organized in paralleled to the 60th Anniversary celebrations was held today (09 December 2010) morning at the Colombo Light House premises with HE the President Mahinda Rajapaksa graced the occasion as the chief guest.
Cabinet Ministers, Secretary Defence and a large number of VVIPs attended this ceremony. The Naval chiefs of overseas Navies and their representatives from twenty one (21) countries were also present at the occasion.
The three Naval Commands, the Afloat, Northern and Eastern commands received the Presidential Colour from HE the President during colourful parade held at the Colombo Light House premises.
Sub Lieutenant Yoshitha Rajapksa, Lieutenant Prageeth Jayawardena,Lieutenant Thilina de Silva received the colours representing Afloat, Northern and Eastern commands respectively.
Deputy Chief of Staff and the Commander Northern Naval Area Rear Admiral Susith Weerasekara, Commander Eastern Naval Area Rear Admiral Jayanath Colombage and the Flag Officer Commanding the Naval Fleet Commodore Sarath Mohotti were present along with the Commander of the Navy Thisara Samarasinghe while the colour awarded by HE the President for respective commands.
Sri Lanka as a courageous nation having defeated terrorism is now enjoying peace dividends. Looking back on the role played by the Sri Lanka Navy in this national effort the Afloat Command, Eastern Command and Northern Command with a long history stand out as prime contributors for the naval success. Therefore, these three commands have been recognized to be awarded with the highest award of Presidential colour.
The Sri Lanka Navy was awarded with this honour in recognition of 25 years of dedicated services to the motherland in year 1975. Similarly, The Naval & Maritime Academy, Trincomalee the premier institution of learning and has trained all serving officers and ratings of the Navy today, at various stages of their careers also awarded with this prestigious honour in the year 2003 in recognition of immense contribution & achievements it has made to the Sri Lanka Navy.
Colour awarded by the Head of State is the highest recognition an armed force could be afforded and such a prestige is bestowed on the service and units in recognition of the conspicuous services rendered to the services.
